Electricity and gas when moving: plan each home separately
By EnergieFinder · Sources checked:
The short answer
Moving involves more than switching suppliers. Settle contracts at the old home and register the new one in time. Record handover date, meter allocation and readings separately for both addresses.
Before leaving: clarify end date and contact
Notify both supplier and grid operator in time, as E-Control advises. Check termination conditions, obtain the confirmed end date and give a contact address for the final bill. Returning keys does not settle these contracts.
Before moving in: confirm supply
Ask the landlord or property manager which meter belongs to you. Arrange supply and grid contracts and the start date in time. Do not reuse identifiers from the old home; existing supply does not mean a contract in your name.
On handover day: collect your evidence
For each home record address, date, meter number, supply point and reading. Add a meter photo and handover record. Report relevant readings to the grid operator. Keep these to check later billing boundaries.
Two addresses, two rows for your handover
Make a table with your old and new addresses. For each, record the handover date, metering point, meter reading, supplier and network operator. Add when each confirmation arrived. Empty fields show where to follow up. If the heating system or household size changes, treat the old home's consumption only as an estimate.
Your checklist
Tick off items as you prepare. Your ticks are not saved.
