Calculate electricity consumption: watts, kWh and annual usage
By EnergieFinder · Sources checked:
The short answer
At constant power: watts ÷ 1,000 × operating hours = consumption in kWh. This calculates one device's use. For an electricity comparison, preferably use billed annual consumption or measured data for your entire household.
Worked example · not a tariff offer
10 W5 h0,05 kWh
One lamp, five hours, constant power. Not a household average.
A device example with explicit assumptions
Assume a lamp uses a constant 10 watts for five hours daily: 10 ÷ 1,000 × 5 = 0.05 kWh per day. Over 365 identical days, that is 18.25 kWh a year. This is a worked example, not a measured average. A variable-power device cannot reliably be calculated at its maximum rated power for every operating hour.
Distinguish estimates from measurements in your log
Create four fields for each device: assumed power, operating time, period and source of the value. Mark “estimated” or “measured”. For variable power, suitable consumption measurement is more informative than a calculation from the rating plate. A list of individual devices is not a complete annual bill and must not silently replace one.
Find household consumption for the tariff comparison
E-Control explains consumption measurement by meter or Smart Meter and when calculated values are used. Find the annual consumption and period on your last bill. Also note changes from moving, electric heating or different usage. Household sizes and preset figures only help you get started; they are not verified Austrian averages.
