How to save on gas costs in Austria: check your tariff and heating use
By EnergieFinder · Sources checked:
The short answer
Gas costs depend on your tariff, consumption and fixed charges. If you hold your own supply contract, compare full annual costs for your postcode and billed kWh. Also review your heating use. If your building has shared heating, first check the heating statement and who holds the supply contract.

Check whether the gas contract is yours
You can choose a gas supplier only when you hold the relevant supply contract. A building manager’s heating statement is not necessarily an individual gas bill. Confirm who signed the contract. For a comparison, use the annual kWh on your gas bill; converting a cubic-metre meter reading requires the factors shown on the bill.
Compare gas offers by annual cost
Use the same postcode and billed kWh for each offer. Record energy, grid charges, taxes and levies as well as one-off discounts. Check the fixed charge, bonus conditions and costs in later years. A lower monthly instalment changes payment timing; it does not automatically reduce annual costs. Saved comparisons are examples, so check current terms before switching.
Review heating use over a full period
Heating use is uneven across the year. Compare complete heating periods and note changes to the home, occupancy and hot-water use. For building or heating-system improvements, seek suitable energy advice. Record settings and use patterns before making a change so you can assess its effect on later consumption.
Estimate the effect of a lower gas rate
Illustrative example, not a tariff offer: 9,600 kWh × €0.01 less per kWh = €96 less in annual energy charges. This assumes the same tax basis and consumption, with other costs unchanged. Add the fixed charge and bonus conditions for your own comparison. This is not a guaranteed saving or an Austrian-wide gas price.
