Network operator or energy supplier: who does what?
By EnergieFinder · Sources checked:
The short answer
The supplier sells electricity or gas; the network operator runs the local network. Changing supplier at the same address changes the supply contract. A combined bill does not make these roles identical.
Find both names on your bill
Arbeiterkammer and Wiener Netze distinguish the two contract partners. Record both names and their contacts from your documents. Similar brands do not reliably identify their roles. A postcode alone also does not establish the network operator for your specific installation.
Ask the right organisation
Use the allocation below for common questions; your own bill or contract determines the actual contact. If one company collects several cost types, request a breakdown. Do not mix network costs with an energy standing charge when comparing.
| Your question | First point of contact |
|---|---|
| Energy price, tariff, bonus | Energy supplier |
| Meter allocation, consumption calculation | Grid operator |
| Unclear bill item | Bill issuer; specify the type of cost |
Read a combined bill
A supplier may bill energy and network use together. Check which components are included. Comparing total costs requires your installation’s network charges, taxes and levies alongside energy prices. For current offers, use the linked E-Control tariff calculator.
Your checklist
Tick off items as you prepare. Your ticks are not saved.
Read the original sources
The factual information was checked against these sources. Checklists and labelled examples are our own presentation. Your supplier’s current documents govern your contract.
Your next step
Prepare your comparison here. Compare current electricity and gas tariffs in the E-Control tariff calculator.
