How to save on electricity costs in Austria: check your tariff and use
By EnergieFinder · Sources checked:
The short answer
There are two ways to reduce electricity costs: choose a tariff that fits your use and consume fewer kWh. Compare full annual costs for the same postcode and consumption. Check the fixed charge, bonus conditions and costs after the first year. A lower monthly instalment alone does not mean you are saving.

Record your starting point
From your annual bill and price sheet, note the billed kWh, billing period, energy rate, annual fixed charge and total annual cost. Separate one-off credits from recurring prices. If you have moved or installed a heat pump, record the change so you do not treat last year’s consumption as directly comparable.
Compare tariffs on equal terms
Use the same postcode, annual consumption and period for every offer. Compare the first year with a bonus against later costs without a one-off bonus. Check the contract term, cancellation rules and the scope of any price guarantee. Saved prices are examples with a timestamp; check a current offer and its terms before switching.
Measure electricity use before changing habits
Start with appliances that run for long periods, such as refrigerators, entertainment equipment and electric water heating. Record their operating time and measured consumption before assessing a change. Use an appliance’s suitable efficiency programme and switch off equipment that is not needed where this is appropriate. Compare any replacement cost with realistic energy savings.
Estimate the effect of a lower kWh rate
Illustrative example, not a tariff offer: 2,500 kWh × €0.02 less per kWh = €50 less in annual energy charges. This assumes the same tax basis and consumption, with other costs unchanged. A higher fixed charge can remove the difference. To estimate lower consumption, multiply avoided kWh by the usage-based rate; fixed charges remain.
