Switching electricity suppliers in Austria: prepare your change
By EnergieFinder · Sources checked:
The short answer
Start with your delivery location, postcode and annual kWh consumption. Switching also requires contract details and your supply point identifier. Submitting a comparison form does not confirm a supply start date.
Start with your last annual bill
Record the delivery address, consumption and billing period, preferably a full year. A short final bill or changed heating only gives a starting point. Keep the price sheet: unit price alone omits standing charges and discount conditions.
Clarify cancellation before ordering
E-Control explains that your new supplier may cancel the old contract with your authorisation. Check minimum duration and cancellation terms first. Confirm who cancels, avoid duplicate requests and keep the order with its confirmation.
Distinguish application from supply start
A normal supplier switch at the same address keeps the existing grid. Use the confirmed switch date, record the meter reading and check that final and new bills cover matching periods. For a move, use a separate checklist for both addresses.
Your comparison folder: keep the offer and start date together
Create a folder with four fields: current contract, new price sheet, responsibility for cancellation and confirmed supply start. Write outstanding questions beside each field. Use the unit-rate and standing-charge guide for costs and the metering-point guide to identify the connection. This keeps your switching plan clear.
Your checklist
Tick off items as you prepare. Your ticks are not saved.
Read the original sources
The factual information was checked against these sources. Checklists and labelled examples are our own presentation. Your supplier’s current documents govern your contract.
Your next step
Prepare your comparison here. Compare current electricity and gas tariffs in the E-Control tariff calculator.
