Gas prices in Austria: compare costs and heating consumption
By EnergieFinder · Sources checked:
The short answer
A gas bill includes the energy price, grid charges, taxes and other levies. Use the billed annual consumption in kWh when comparing offers. A meter reading in cubic metres or a monthly instalment is not the same as the total annual cost.

A gas bill includes more than the energy rate
E-Control describes energy, grid charges, taxes and levies as separate cost components. Check whether an offer includes all of them or only the supplier’s energy price. Do not compare an energy-only rate directly with an all-in price from an old bill. Check the price sheet for the fixed charge and usage rate.
Use billed kWh and the right heating period
Write down the billing period beside your kWh consumption. A winter month is not representative of twelve equal months for a gas-heated home. E-Control explains how gas consumption is calculated and converted. If your meter shows cubic metres, use the conversion factors on your bill rather than an assumed national factor.
Check whether you have your own gas contract
A household gas comparison is relevant when you can choose the gas supply contract yourself. A building manager’s shared-heating statement may relate to a central system rather than your own supplier contract. Confirm who holds the contract before comparing. Compare offers using the same postcode, billed kWh and period, including fixed costs and bonus conditions.
