Fixed, indexed or dynamic tariffs: what to ask
By EnergieFinder · Sources checked:
The short answer
Check whether your energy price is guaranteed, adjusted periodically by an index or linked to time-dependent market prices. Your contract, meter data and tolerance for fluctuations matter. Today’s price does not predict next year.
Record the pricing rule in one sentence
Copy the applicable price, when it can change and the adjustment formula from the price list. “Fixed” alone is insufficient. An indexed tariff may change periodically with an index; time-dependent products bill differently. E-Control explains the differences.
Check meter data alongside daily routines
For a dynamic product, ask about the required measurement interval and data sharing. E-Control identifies suitable smart meter settings as a condition for spot-market products. Confirm that your installation qualifies. Record major consumption you can shift and usage tied to fixed daily routines.
Plan an annual budget without predicting prices
Compare standing charges, volume-based surcharges and the tax basis as well as energy prices. Consider how an expensive period could affect your budget. Historical or annualised current costs are not guaranteed. Fluctuations you cannot afford are an important limit when choosing a tariff.
Choose a tariff with a list of open questions
Write down three questions: How is my price calculated? What metering data does billing require? How much fluctuation can my household afford? Add the contract's answer and outstanding questions for the supplier. The Smart Meter guide helps check data; it does not confirm that your connection qualifies for a specific tariff.
