New customer bonuses: compare the first year and later costs separately
By EnergieFinder · Sources checked:
The short answer
Compare a bonus offer without the one-off discount too. Check the payment conditions and the costs for another year. A low first-year total alone does not tell you what you will pay if you keep the contract longer.
Three questions about every bonus
How much is the discount at your consumption level? When is it credited? What conditions apply, such as new customer status or contract length? E-Control explains comparisons with and without switching discounts. Write down the answers before counting a bonus as a definite saving.
Bonus and later costs: a worked example
This calculation uses fictional tariffs A and B for 2,500 kWh a year. Both have an annual energy standing charge of €60. A costs 15 cents/kWh with a one-off €100 bonus; B costs 14 cents/kWh without a bonus. All amounts use the same tax basis. Network charges and other levies are excluded.
Worked example · not a tariff offer
Energy component only; grid fees and other charges excluded. Assumed unchanged prices and 2,500 kWh each year.
Hypothetical tariff A
- First year
- 335,00 €
- Next year without the bonus
- 435,00 €
- Two years in total
- 770,00 €
Hypothetical tariff B
- First year
- 410,00 €
- Next year without the bonus
- 410,00 €
- Two years in total
- 820,00 €
A in year one: 2,500 × €0.15 + €60 − €100 = €335. Without the bonus: €435. B: 2,500 × €0.14 + €60 = €410 each year. This is not a personal savings estimate.
Apply the method to actual price lists
A is cheaper in the first year; B is cheaper in the next year without a bonus. The two-year total assumes unchanged consumption and prices and full receipt of the bonus. Apply the method to current price lists, rather than using these example amounts for your home. Review the offer before the discount ends.
A reusable bonus check
Record four items for each offer: costs with the bonus, costs without it, eligibility conditions and credit date. Mark unconfirmed discounts as outstanding. A monthly average calculated from an annual price is not a promised instalment. The instalment guide explains how payments relate to actual annual costs.
