Green electricity in Austria: read electricity labelling correctly
By EnergieFinder · Sources checked:
The short answer
For green electricity, check the electricity label and specific product details. They show the declared energy-source mix and other origin information. A green product name alone explains neither the evidence nor contract costs.
Distinguish the supplier mix from the product mix
E-Control describes electricity labelling as a breakdown of energy sources. The annual bill shows the supplier mix and, where applicable, product mixes. Check the reference period. Do not apply a company-wide claim to a particular offer without checking. Record which document actually describes your chosen tariff.
Read guarantees of origin and environmental information
Guarantees of origin underpin labelling; E-Control oversees the system. The bill also reports CO₂ emissions and radioactive waste from generation. Read these alongside the declared energy sources. Ask for evidence of unclear advertising claims rather than inferring local generation or additional environmental benefits from a product name.
Your green-electricity check card
Complete four fields: specific product, labelling year, origin document and total costs. Add environmental criteria important to you, such as verifiable generation information. Record outstanding supplier questions in writing. Also check the unit rate, standing charge, bonus and commitment period as with any electricity contract.
