Switching gas suppliers: the right household details

The short answer
First check whether you hold a gas supply contract yourself. Compare using the delivery location and billed annual kWh consumption. The gas meter’s cubic metre reading is not interchangeable with that figure.
Which bill are you looking at?
Gas bills and heating cost statements differ. Check the contracting party, consumption address and unit. If you only have a property manager’s statement, ask who holds the gas contract. Do not copy the building’s heating costs into your personal gas comparison unchecked.
Match consumption to the heating year
Use billed kWh and the period. One winter month cannot represent twelve equal gas-heating months. E-Control explains temperature-dependent usage and volume conversion. Check whether the bill covers a whole year and uses readings or estimates.
Compare two documents side by side
Put the current price sheet beside the new offer. List standing charge, unit price, bonus conditions and confirmed start separately: this reveals omissions better than advertising totals. When moving, also plan termination and registration at both homes.
Gas comparison: explain consumption and price separately
First record the kWh from your gas bill. On a second line, note whether you use gas for heating, hot water or cooking. A third line records whether usage will stay the same next year. Then use the gas-price guide to compare costs; converting m³ belongs in its separate guide.
Your checklist
Tick off items as you prepare. Your ticks are not saved.
Read the original sources
The factual information was checked against these sources. Checklists and labelled examples are our own presentation. Your supplier’s current documents govern your contract.
Your next step
Prepare your comparison here. Compare current electricity and gas tariffs in the E-Control tariff calculator.
