Gas: convert m³ to kWh using your bill’s conversion factor
By EnergieFinder · Sources checked:
The short answer
For a simple calculation: gas volume in m³ × conversion factor in kWh/m³ = energy in kWh. Use the figures on your bill. A single nationwide factor cannot reliably reproduce your actual Austrian gas bill.
A meter reading is not annual consumption
A meter reading is cumulative. For a period, use the difference between its readings or the stated consumption volume. For tariff comparisons, the billed annual kWh figure is usually better because it already includes the conversion.
What the conversion factor includes
E-Control explains calorific value and volume correction, which depend on location and measurement conditions. These convert volume into energy. Calorific values are determined monthly, and billing subperiods may use different values. Do not reduce such bills to a guessed single factor.
Worked example · assumed factor
1,000 m³ × 10.5 kWh/m³ = 10.500 kWh
10.5 is an example assumption, not an Austria-wide standard. Use the billed kWh figure or the corresponding conversion factors on your bill.
Check an unclear figure
Mark the period, volume and corresponding conversion figures. Ask the network operator if the relationship is unclear. E-Control offers an approximate conversion check. The example below only explains multiplication; it replaces neither that check nor your billed consumption.
